What is Meditation?
Meditation is a fascinating and diverse practice that can be tailored to suit individual needs and preferences. This guide will help you explore different meditation techniques, understand their purposes, and provide practical tips for incorporating meditation into your daily life.
Meditation’s Essential Purpose: Union with God
The word meditation shares its root with “medeli” and “medical,” meaning to heal. Meditation encompasses the essential idea of healing or wholeness—becoming whole in mind and body and expressing that wholeness in our lives. This journey to wholeness draws many people to meditation, helping us shift our focus from the external world to the internal, where we reconnect with our divine essence.

Types: Guided and Nonguided Meditation
There are two primary types of meditation—guided and nonguided.
- Guided Meditation: In guided meditation, a leader speaks positive, uplifting words or intones sounds, guiding meditators to let their minds flow with the sound or word, connecting to the one source, God.
- Nonguided Meditation: In nonguided meditation, individuals allow their thoughts to flow freely with one particular idea or without any specific direction, reaching new levels of awareness. This type of meditation often involves symbols—words, ideas, pictures, or phrases—that serve as starting points for deeper contemplation.
